Introduction to Chemical Effect of Electric Current

  • Gas bubbles that are formed at electrodes
  • Metals deposited on electrodes
  • Change of colour of solutions

What happens when electricity is passed through conducting solution?

  • Construct a circuit by connecting the cell, wire and LED.
  • Take the 2 free ends of the wire (one from led and other from cell) and dip in the solution
  1. If LED glows, then it indicates that the liquid is a conductor of electricity, else it is not.
  2. If the glow is bright then the liquid is good conductor
  3. If the glow is low, then the liquid is bad conductor.

Above process is also called an electrolysis.

Applications of Electrolysis

Electroplating

Electroplating is a process where a layer of metal is deposited on another material with the help of electricity.

Chemical Effect of Electric Current
  • Electroplating is used in imitation jewellery which is made by applying a layer of gold or silver.
  • Chrome plating on cars/bike parts through electroplating
  • Parts of a bicycle and motorbike are chrome plated through electroplating.
  • Tin cans are made by electroplating tin on iron.
  • Coating zinc on the iron to prevent corrosion and rust.
